People ask this when they mean the black-and-white one that stares. Not Lassie. Lassie is a Rough Collie. Different dog.
A house dog lives in the house with you. Sleeps on the floor. Rides in the car. Is not a sheepdog on a thousand acres. Border Collies can do that. A lot of them don’t like it.
The short answer
Sometimes. Not by default.
They were bred to work all day and think about livestock. In a house, the livestock is you, the kids, the cat, the Roomba. If they don’t get a job, they invent one. That’s when the couch dies and the barking starts.
If you work from home, walk hard, train, and don’t vanish for nine hours, a Border Collie can be an excellent house dog. If you wanted a pretty dog that naps while you’re at the office, this is the wrong breed. We already wrote the longer warning: Things to Consider Before Getting A Border Collie. This one is just the house.
What “house” actually asks of them
Indoors they still need to move their brain. A fenced yard is not a job. They’ll patrol the fence and bark at the school bus.
Kids running through the living room look like sheep. Some Borders nip heels. That’s herding, not meanness. You can train it. You have to.
Alone all day is the failure mode. Smart plus bored is cabinets, shoes, and the drywall. The old post has the apartment owner who throws a frisbee twice a day or the place gets torn up. That’s the deal.
They can be gentle. They can be velcro. They are not a bear rug. For the couch impersonation, look at a Rough Collie.
When it works
You’re home a lot, or you come back and actually work the dog.
Walks aren’t a sniff around the block. They need something that makes them tired in the head: training, a puzzle, fetch until they’re stupid, agility in the backyard. A toy that makes them think beats another stuffed animal they gut in four minutes.
You don’t use a laser pointer and then wonder why they chase the sun on the floor. Some of them get stuck on that.
You wanted a partner, not a decoration.
Jacksonville, while we’re here
Heat still counts. A Border Collie will work until they drop if you let them. Midday asphalt is the same rule as the Roughs. Shade, water, don’t be a hero in August.
So is it a good house dog?
Yes, if the house is a place you live with them and you give the engine something to do.
No, if house dog means quiet, easy, and fine on the sofa until dinner.
Don’t get one because they’re smart. Smart is the problem if you’re busy.
Read the longer Border Collie piece before you answer a Craigslist ad. If you wanted Lassie in the living room, that’s the Rough.
